A: I think most chess players are smart. In order to be better than them, you need to have the right attitude and habit. So, coaching is not just about teaching them skills, but to change the students’ attitude and habits about chess. That is the part which is hard, whereby you’ll need an experienced coach to build the qualities into the students.Q:What can a child gain from learning chess?
A:There is a list of benefits a child could gain from learning chess. But if you are looking for thinking skills and building good character, chess is the most effective tool.
Q:My child can't sit still. Can chess help him to concentrate?
A:There are researches on how chess can help in one’s study. One of the many ways is that chess can help a kid to concentrate better.
Q:How long does it take to learn chess?
A:This depend on what kind of objective you are trying to achieve. Normally it takes about half year to learn the rules and some basic strategies in chess. After that, it will take about a year to learn the tactics in chess
Q:What kind of activities do you have during your chess class?
A:There are 3 sessions during chess class: teaching, theory and puzzle solving. The coach will make the adjustments according to the situation.
Q:What is the best age to start learning chess?
A:Age 6 is the age where a child has no problem in learning chess. Age 5 is the common age to start, but some of them might have problems in grasping abstract concepts. Age 2 is the youngest age I have encountered.
Q: Is the playing strength of a chess coach important in coaching a kid?
A: I agree with this partially. However, playing strength is just one of the many factors in choosing a chess coach. In my opinion, teaching ability is more important. A coach needs to know exactly what to teach at different stages.
Q: What is the role of a coach to help my kid ?
A: This is the information age. You can access a lot of information from books to the internet. As a Chess coach, besides providing chess knowledge, the most valuable part is our view and advices. Kids will be able to avoid pitfalls and learn fast from the coach as he was a player too and comes with experience in teaching different type of students.
Q: Is the class too big for my kid?
A: I have the experience as a school teacher for a few years. So, maintaining a class is never a problem to me. But if you think your kid needs more attention from me in order to learn faster and better, then Small Group or Personal coaching is a good option to choose.
Q: Are there any secrets to improve?
A: Yes. Learn the right skill, train often, gain experience from tournament and take the coach’s advice. There is no such thing as special new weapon.
